"CONCERT FOR TREES" USHER HALL, EDINBURGH
7.30PM 26TH NOVEMBER 2011

This is one of Scotland's official celebrations of the UN's International Year of Forests, highlighting the exciting and creative work being done to preserve and enhance woods and forests in Scotland and worldwide.

An inspiring and fun evening of music, poetry and dance for all the family exploring the enchanting and magical world of woods, the lungs of the earth.
The event will be set against the backdrop of a day in the forest, recreating some of the sounds, spirits and aura of woods and trees, which captured the imagination of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle - creator of the world's most famous detective.

Having spent much of his childhood in Edinburgh , the magical thread running through the evening will be an old sycamore tree, that stood in his Edinburgh childhood home garden until recently, which the author would have played in and under as a child. This unique tree has now been given a complete voice in the form of a string quartet- "The Arthur Conan Doyle Quartet",which will make its first public appearance on the night. The quartet will be joined by the critically-acclaimed 'Sherlock' violin made from the same tree in 2009, to give a varied programme of music throughout the evening. The instruments will in turn be joined as part of the performance by a large choir to sing a specially composed setting of a pre -First World War poem" Written in a Wood September 1910" by Wilfred Owen, the famous war poet who also spent a period of time in Edinburgh, convalescing.

Principal performers will include award-winning Armenian concert violinist Ani Batikian, St Patrick's Baroque Ensemble, Hungarian gypsy fiddler Jani Lang and Band. Will Pickvance and Feargus Heatherington will perform an early classical Scottish piece, "Through the Woods, Laddie" and poetry will be read at various stages throughout the evening. The audience will be joined on the evening by Owen Dudley Edwards, one of the world's authorities on Sherlock Holmes and Conan Doyle.

This concert is the latest in a series of concerts with The Sherlock violin and the Arthur Conan Doyle string quartet, supporting a range of children's and environmental charities, both local and international
